Patience for Impatience?

Posted by  /

The target of the Matrix diagram is psychological flexibility while doing both Away and Toward moves.

When you sense impatience in another person do you feel more or less flexible? To increase psychological flexibility, do you respond with impatience for impatience or with patience for impatience?

Notice which way works for increasing psychological flexibility.

In the Beginning

Posted by  /

The Beginning is Crucial. You are setting up a dance of psychological flexibility. Words are at the same time the connection between the dancers and the source of inflexibility. Start with one set of words and you might increase inflexibility, another set will maintain, and yet another set will increase flexibility.

What words do you choose to say first for psychological flexibility? Let’s experience a couple of sets of words and feel if they give us a clue to the answer.

  • Tell me about your problems. [Notice how those words feel inside of you.]

  • Who’s important to you? [Notice how those words feel.]

Which set of words is restricting? Which set of words is expanding?

Be Well,

Kevin

Watch That Language

Posted by  /

ACT is based on the notion that language (story) can help us move toward AND language can get us stuck.
One way to think of this is that we all have lots of stories we tell ourselves. Some of these stories are very short. For example, you might think, “I can’t do anything right, I’m worthless.” That’s a little story. You might also think, “I’m really good at doing stuff like this!” Again, a little story.

Both of those stories carry a bit (or a lot) of hook, and either can be followed by a toward or an away move.

From and ACT – the Matrix point of view you might notice the story, notice the hook, and the next move, Toward or Away.

Be Well,

Kevin

Noticing the Hook of a Story

Noticing Hooks: Real Life Example

For this example I have gone to Google News and found the top story: Joe Paterno, Penn States’s famous football coach. The news points at a specific behavior: In 2002 Paterno did not strongly follow up after he found his assistant coach to be a pedophile. The abuse continued for nine more years.

As you read or heard about this story, did you notice a hook showing up? Where in your body did you notice the hook? What was your next behavior after noticing the hook?

Kevin
